The Walk30 Burnaby | New West Challenge is ON! 04/04/2018 Are you up for a challenge? If you’re reading this you’ve probably already signed up to participate in Walk30. Of course you have. “Challenge?” you ask, “What’s challenging about walking 30 minutes a day?” That’s the voice of the habitual pedestrian, the routine walker. OK, so here’s a real challenge for you. Proselytize. Get out there and convert someone who doesn’t already walk 30 minutes a day. Go after your friend, your neighbour, your work buddy, your kids. See if you can

Walking in Spring... 02/08/2018 So January was cold and wet. February? Probably more of the same. Nasty. Some days it’s a challenge to get out and walk. (Yes, I’ve heard the comment “there’s no bad weather, just bad clothing”.) So – let’s look ahead. The days are getting longer. Spring is on its way. And with Spring comes some great opportunities to get out and walk. There’s the SunRun (April 22). You could do the Walk10K, or NordicWalk10K. Apparently there are training programs to get you ready for success. Check

New West Weather Guide 01/05/2018 So – you got your curbside collection schedule for 2018. Many of us it received it delivered to the door at the end of December. With that schedule came a new item, a brochure entitled “New West Weather Guide”. Please – read it! The message is clear: “our sidewalks are shared by everyone”. And we’re all responsible for keeping those sidewalks safe and accessible. Being able to get around on foot is important. Mobility for pedestrians is as important as mobility for drivers and

Newsworthy Items 10/27/2017 Did you read the Record this week (Oct. 26, 2017)? There were three (three!) stories with a pedestrian theme. Three items about pedestrians, all in the same newspaper edition (and this in the middle of bike-to- work week!) Those of us who get around the city on foot are not used to so much spotlight. #1 Sidewalks. Hooray – Connaught Heights is getting one new sidewalk, the first of many, we hope. Construction of the Twenty-first Street sidewalk will be started next month. Finally we’ll be able

Forecast: SNOW! 10/11/2017 It’s October. Winter’s coming. What if………..? What if we have another winter like the last one? (Didn’t we get the first snow in October?) If the weather’s as nasty this coming winter, what will you do? Last winter was talked about as an exceptional winter, but it wasn’t all that unusual. We’ve had winters that brought more snow, and winters with longer than usual periods of low temperature. The most recent “exceptional” winter was 2008-2009, when the City drafted a Snow and Ice

NWSS Replacement Project - Updates 09/12/2017 Earlier this year, we teamed up with HUB New West to write a joint letter regarding the New Westminster Secondary School replacement project. HUB is a well-respected bicycle advocacy group with several branches in the Lower Mainland.
